The Best Things To Buy In October

Waiting until just the right moment to buy something is one of the best things you can do to save money.

Camping Gear and Outdoor Equipment

Prices on outdoor products tend to be highest when demand is highest.  With summer becoming a distant memory, now is the time to act if you need new camping supplies.  Being outdoors is less appealing for most now, which means a lot of outdoor gear is going on sale in October.

There will be plenty of discounts on camping gear and outdoor equipment this month, including the following items:

  • Outdoor Apparel – hiking boots, etc.
  • Sleeping Bags
  • Tents
  • Watersport equipment

Example Retailers + Brands:

  • Cabela’s
  • Columbia
  • The North Face

As is the case in September, October is also a prime time to buy a new car (even more so).  Selection is still plentiful and prices are low.  The current year is coming to a close, and car dealers are scrambling to get rid of their older models to make way for the new ones.

If you are in the market for a new car, don’t wait too long, as selection will be scarce come November and December.  You should be able to get a great deal this month, along with other incentives (no down payment, etc.).

Halloween Costumes / Decor

The best time time to find deals on Halloween items is on Halloween and the day after the holiday (November 1st), but the left over selection usually isn’t all that great.

Therefore, the best time to buy candy, costumes and decorations is the week before Halloween.  In the week leading up to Halloween, you’ll find many last minute deals and discounts (ranging from 20-50% off) on costumes and more.  There should be a decent selection to choose from still.

Jeans icon

Historically, October has been one of the best times of the year to buy jeans.  Back to school deals have ended and retailers typically have a large surplus of jeans they are looking to unload.  As the weather is getting colder, too, now is a great time to stock up on denim for the year.

Be sure to look out for jean clearance and sales (including Buy One, Get One and 50% off deals) from retailers such as Macy’s and Target and on brands like Levis, Lee Jeans, Mossimo, and more.  Why not treat yourself to a new pair of jeans this month? 🙂

Outdoor Accessories (Patio Furniture, Gardening, etc.)

Look for mark downs and discounts on the following lawn and garden items as retailers are looking to clear them out:

  • Bulbs
  • Fertilizers
  • Gardening tools
  • Gloves
  • Lawn mowers
  • Leaf blowers
  • Mulch
  • Perennials
  • Planters
  • Weed eaters

For example ⇒ Lowe’s is currently offering 50%-90% Off Live Plants

⇒ Air Conditioners

Sales on air conditioning units are typically the best during the colder winter months while demand is low and people are thinking about buying heaters instead.   Retailers need the floor space for the upcoming holiday shopping season and will be looking to get rid of their air conditioners for the year by deeply discounting them.

⇒ Patio Furniture

The same idea as above applies to patio furniture as well.  Stores will be looking to clear out this year’s patio furniture to make room for more seasonally appropriate merchandise.

Wedding Stuff

Since the summer months are a popular time for weddings (aka ‘wedding season’), you can take advantage of many markdowns by buying wedding supplies in October.  Such supplies include decorations, invitations, wedding dresses, favors, cake toppers, and more.  Whether you’re planning your own wedding or helping a friend out, you can save big by purchasing wedding supplies this month.

Also, scheduling a wedding in off-peak times (low demand seasons) can save you money.  When there’s less competition for dates, you can have more negotiating power for a better rate.  Thus, now might be a good time to hire a caterer or to find a venue!

Apple Products (iPhones)

If you’re an Apple fan, than you probably know what September means.  If not, September is when Apple announces new products and generations of existing devices (like the iPhone) at their keynote event.

All the iPhone 8 Rumors You Need to Know

As a result, prices on current (older) models drop heavily as they are discounted to make room for these newer devices.

Look for nice deals at the Apple Store, Best Buy, Walmart, etc.

September is a good time to buy a new bicycle, with many discounts to be found.  As the riding season is ending and with fall and winter approaching, retailers are looking to clear out current inventory so they’ll slash prices in order to do so.  Previous years models will be especially discounted.

If you’re considering a bike as a Christmas gift or looking to upgrade bikes for next spring, now is a good time to purchase.  Don’t forget to do your research first, however.

Your Guide to Buying a New Bike

One of the best months to get a great deal on a car is September (especially Labor Day weekend).  As next year’s models begin rolling in, current year vehicles must be moved out to make way.   Besides large discounts, you’ll also see a number of offers designed to entice buyers, including zero down and 0% APR financing.

According to, the last day of September is one of the best days of the year to negotiate a deal on a car.  TrueCar estimates that buyers save roughly 7.9% off the price of a car on this date.  To get the best deal, check out my money saving tips here!

Labor Day Sales

Labor Day falls on the first weekend of September and brings with it some of the best deals of the season.  Many stores drop prices and offer deep discounts, especially on (summer) clothing and accessories.  Expect to see sales on warm-weather items such as air conditioners and outdoor furniture as well.  Be sure to check your inbox for notifications of discounts from your favorite retailers.

The Best Things To Buy In August

Image result for august

Waiting until just the right moment to buy something is one of the best things you can do to save money.

As students are heading back to school and with newer models coming in the fall, August makes for an ideal time to buy a laptop.  At discounts around 25% off, usually only Black Friday offers better prices on laptops than back-to-school time.

Make sure to shop around for deals from Dell, Lenovo, Asus, etc. and be on the lookout for rebates, bundle options, and other offers.

There are many different options out there at different price levels, but you can most likely get a decent laptop for just $300-$350.  Experts suggest that students pay no more than $500 for one.

Outdoor Furniture / Grills / Pool Equipment

Bigger ticket outdoor items like patio furniture, pool equipment and grills are available at a discount this month, as retailers are looking to move them out before the fall.

  • Gas and charcoal grills on sale for up to 60% off
  • Stock up on goggles, swim diapers, pools, slides, etc.
  • There are many more patio furniture deals in August than in June or July

Retailers such as Target, Walmart, and Sears will have major clearance deals on these items with discounts up to 75% off.

Sales usually peak by Labor Day weekend.  The longer you wait, the less choices will be available.  You won’t get to enjoy it for too much longer this summer, but you’ll still have the rest of August and most of September.

School Supplies

You will find big savings on school supplies in August.   Notebooks, pens, pencils, paper, and tissues are just some of the items you’ll find deeply discounted (as low as a penny!).

These discounts include backpacks and laptop bags as well.  “If you’re in the market for a new backpack for [school or] work, or a discounted laptop bag, there’s no better time to find a deal than in August,” says Brent Shelton of Fatwallet.

Office supply stores like Staples slash prices on many other office items as well, including copy paper, ink, office chairs, etc.

Check the fliers each week for the best office and school supply deals.  Target and Walmart typically offer the best prices on supplies.

Also, if you can, wait a week before school starts for the best deals.  Prices will only go down in the coming weeks as retailers attempt to get rid of extra inventory by putting items on clearance.

Summer Clothes / Swimwear

August offers some of the lowest prices of the year on summer clothing items such as shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops, making it a great time to stock up.   Swimsuits and beach towels will be marked way down as well.

This is a result of stores needing to clear summer inventory in preparation for fall and winter inventory.

Take advantage of August’s summer clothing clearance sales and stock up.  You’ll see 60%-75% off many summer clothing by the end of the month, but as noted above, the cheaper prices come with less choice as shoppers will have picked over most of the merchandise.

Back to school sales will be in full effect as well, so its a good time to buy shoes and jeans.  For example, Target is currently offering 40% off of all jeans and JCPenney has Arizona jeans on sale as low as $11.05.  In conjunction with back-to-school-season, many states waive state taxes on clothing for a few days in August.

The Best Things To Buy In July

Image result for july

Waiting until just the right moment to buy something is one of the best things you can do to save money.

Amazon Prime

This year, Amazon Prime Day will take place on July 11th.

This is a day (similar to Black Friday) where Amazon offers Prime members over 100,000 deals across all product categories.   New deals start every 5 minutes and items tend to sell out quickly.

If you’re a Prime member, there are great discounts to be had, especially on Amazon-brand products.

Other retailers take notice as well and offer their own deals in response.  For example, Walmart had deals of up to 50% off thousands of items last time, as well as free shipping on orders over $35.

If you’re not already a Prime member, sign up for a free trial now!

New furniture will arriving in showrooms in August, which means retailers will be looking to move current/older stock to make room for the new inventory.  Look out for sweet clearance sales, as July is one of the best clearance times of the year for furniture.  You can expect to spend 10 percent to 50 percent less when purchasing furniture during this month.  Outdoor furniture will be the most heavily discounted, as demand is soon to drop.

Some exceptions, however, include mattresses (best time to buy is May) and office furniture (best time to buy is May and August).

Since you have the upper hand, negotiate for extra items or more savings!

It is generally not advised to buy clothes that are in season.  However, this breaks the rule, as July is the best month for swimwear deals.

Expect to see discounts from retailers (such as PacSun and Target) ranging from 25% to 80% off with prices starting as low as $5 (children) and $9 (adults).

The Best Things To Buy In January

Image result for january png

Waiting until just the right moment to buy something is one of the best things you can do to save money.

Bath and Bed Linens

Do you know where the term “White Sales” originated?  Here’s a history lesson for you.

In 1878, John Wanamaker introduced the first “White Sale” when he wanted to increase his sales during the slow winter months and offered a discount on bed linens (which at the time were only available in white).

Thus, January is the month when department stores host “white sales” to clear out their existing inventory of sheets, towels, blankets and more.   Look for bedding discounts up to 50-70% from such retailers as Kohl’s, Target, and Macy’s.  Savings will be especially deep on clearance items.

Fitness Equipment / Gym Memberships

Image result for fitness png

As many people have losing weight as their new years resolution, retailers slash prices on fitness equipment (even large ones like treadmills) in January to lure consumers.

For the same reason, January is usually a good time to sign up for a gym membership.  Many gyms offer special rates and other perks such as no sign up fees or free personal training sessions (don’t be afraid to ask if they don’t outright offer it).

Be sure not to lock yourself into a long term agreement if you’re unsure you’ll use it for the whole year.  Also, it is wise to read of all of the fine print when signing up.

Gift Cards

See the source image

Lots of people receive gifts cards during the holiday season, with many now looking to get rid of their unwanted ones for cash.  Check out various gift card exchange websites to buy at a discounted rate.

Here are a few to try out:

  • (<- Get a $5 credit for using this link to sign up!)
  • eBay

They usually sell for up to 35% less than face value, although ~10% seems to be the norm for more popular stores. The more in demand a card is, the less of a discount you will get.

Jewelry / Watches

Business is typically slow for jewelers right after Christmas until Valentine’s Day, so you are likely to find some great deals during this time.

As far as watches go,  January is, too, a better than usual time to buy.  This is largely due to a variety of deals from retailers such as Amazon, Ashford, and The Watchery.  You’ll likely see discounts on brands such as Casio, Timex, Movado, and TAG Heuer.

Honorable Mention:
  • Christmas Decorations
  • Tax Software
  • TVs & Electronics – just before the Super Bowl, retailers normally discount their selections of HDTVs and other home-theater essentials (such as soundbars)
  • Video Games
  • Winter Clothing

The Best Things To Buy In June

Waiting until just the right moment to buy something is one of the best things you can do to save money.

Image result for national dairy month

June is National Dairy Month and dairy manufacturers will be heavily promoting their products.   You’ll notice an increase in the amount of sales and coupons on items such as yogurt, cheese, and ice cream.  Be sure to stack your coupons with in-store specials!

Dishes / Silverware

Early summer (June) is the peak of wedding season as well as the start of graduation season and many are adding dishware to their registries.  As a result, retailers respond with enticing promotions on fine china and dishware, making it the perfect time to purchase such items.

Look for deals from 25 to 50% off regular retail prices!  Deals will be promoted via email, fliers, social media, etc.

Gym Memberships

New Year’s resolutions are long forgotten and most people would simply prefer to be outdoors in the nice weather, making June a good time to negotiate or find greats deals on gym memberships.  Gyms will be competing for your business by lowering rates as new membership rates plummet.

Lack of demand = decrease in prices.

store guide

Each June, you can typically find deals on lingerie across a few retailers, led by the Victoria’s Secret Semi-Annual Sale.  This sale typically lasts 3 to 4 weeks and features discounts up to 70% of a number of items.  Look for discounts from retailers such as Frederick’s of Hollywood, Soma and Sears as well.

Tools / Hardware

Image result for toolbox fathers day

Father’s Day is upcoming this month, and as a result, you can find some great bargains on tools both online and at local home improvement stores.  There will be deals on everything from full tool sets to power drills, as retailers compete for business.

Tools rarely go on sale, so now might be a good time to stock up for your next DIY project.

The Best Things To Buy In May

Waiting until just the right moment to buy something is one of the best things you can do to save money.

Health and Beauty

The month of May is a great time to buy and stock up on items such as sunscreen and perfume.  There will be plenty of coupons available online and in inserts for these products this month.

May is the one of the best (if not the best) month to buy a new mattress.  Here a few reasons why:

  1. Seasonality
  2. Stores are trying to clear out their older model mattresses in preparation for Memorial Day sales
  3. “Spring cleaning” and rejuvenation mentality this time of year
  4. Travel months beginning (visitors need a place to sleep)

You should be able to find deals from 50%-70% off  at mattress retailers.  Look for coupons or price-matching offers to stack onto these deals.

Memorial Day Sales

Memorial Day sales will star appearing as early as May 12, weeks ahead of the big 3-day weekend.  These sales are known for their stackable discounts.  Furniture, clothing (see below), and mattresses (see above) are just a few of the items that you will find discounts for.

You can find great appliance deals also in May, particularly on refrigerators.

Refrigerator manufacturers start unveiling new models in May and June, which means older models are put on sale.  This, combined with Memorial Day bargains, means you’ll see for discounts up to 80% off.

Spring Apparel

Since department stores and clothing retailers are in clearance mode preparing to make room for summer styles, May is a good time to buy spring apparel.  Those shorts that you were interested in buying last month are now probably available for much cheaper.

Especially on Memorial Day weekend, discounts of 40-75% on spring apparel can be had.  Be on the look out for discount codes to use on top of already reduced prices at stores such as Macy’s and Kohl’s.
