Waiting until just the right moment to buy something is one of the best things you can do to save money.
As students are heading back to school and with newer models coming in the fall, August makes for an ideal time to buy a laptop. At discounts around 25% off, usually only Black Friday offers better prices on laptops than back-to-school time.
Make sure to shop around for deals from Dell, Lenovo, Asus, etc. and be on the lookout for rebates, bundle options, and other offers.
There are many different options out there at different price levels, but you can most likely get a decent laptop for just $300-$350. Experts suggest that students pay no more than $500 for one.
Outdoor Furniture / Grills / Pool Equipment
Bigger ticket outdoor items like patio furniture, pool equipment and grills are available at a discount this month, as retailers are looking to move them out before the fall.
Gas and charcoal grills on sale for up to 60% off
Stock up on goggles, swim diapers, pools, slides, etc.
There are many more patio furniture deals in August than in June or July
Retailers such as Target, Walmart, and Sears will have major clearance deals on these items with discounts up to 75% off.
Sales usually peak by Labor Day weekend. The longer you wait, the less choices will be available. You won’t get to enjoy it for too much longer this summer, but you’ll still have the rest of August and most of September.
You will find big savings on school supplies in August. Notebooks, pens, pencils, paper, and tissues are just some of the items you’ll find deeply discounted (as low as a penny!).
These discounts include backpacks and laptop bags as well. “If you’re in the market for a new backpack for [school or] work, or a discounted laptop bag, there’s no better time to find a deal than in August,” says Brent Shelton of Fatwallet.
Office supply stores like Staples slash prices on many other office items as well, including copy paper, ink, office chairs, etc.
Check the fliers each week for the best office and school supply deals. Target and Walmart typically offer the best prices on supplies.
Also, if you can, wait a week before school starts for the best deals. Prices will only go down in the coming weeks as retailers attempt to get rid of extra inventory by putting items on clearance.
Summer Clothes / Swimwear
August offers some of the lowest prices of the year on summer clothing items such as shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops, making it a great time to stock up. Swimsuits and beach towels will be marked way down as well.
This is a result of stores needing to clear summer inventory in preparation for fall and winter inventory.
Take advantage of August’s summer clothing clearance sales and stock up. You’ll see 60%-75% off many summer clothing by the end of the month, but as noted above, the cheaper prices come with less choice as shoppers will have picked over most of the merchandise.
Back to school sales will be in full effect as well, so its a good time to buy shoes and jeans. For example, Target is currently offering 40% off of all jeans and JCPenney has Arizona jeans on sale as low as $11.05. In conjunction with back-to-school-season, many states waive state taxes on clothing for a few days in August.
